You will not shake your head,

refusing to stretch out your hand.

You will not ask, What is it?

You will again believe

in your innocence and joy,

And when I walk up to you,

my hand closed around a treasure,

you will extend a trusting palm,

And I will drop into it

my heart.

The Paths Home: A Journey of Becoming

Chapter 1

How many animals he had at the zoo now, Cory wasn’t sure as they were free to come and go. Some stayed, while others only came for one visit. Whether they came and went or came to stay, they enriched his life in countless ways. He wondered if he would ever know the extent of their help.

He had been strolling through the park-like estate and now stopped at the crest of the Japanese bridge to survey the vastness everything had become. Ahead of him, the baobab trees stood staunchly in a group and were a nice little walk from the bamboo grove with its paths that meandered through shadowed mazes of frothy leaves and stalks. Somewhere in the middle of them was the path that only sometimes he could find. It led to the spring that fed the lake he was standing above. Stretching out behind him a distance from the house were the forests of immense pines and deciduous hardwoods: the old growth forest and the new, young forest. read more

How To Be a Hero

Quests and Fairy Tales revolve around the idea of a person stepping up to volunteer to undertake a task others find impossible or do not want to do. First responders are a good example of such volunteers. They run towards the disaster instead of away from it. In fairy tales, the king puts out a challenge: Who will step up to slay the dragon? In more modern stories, a hero is needed to defeat more practical evil: dictators, kidnappers, murderers.

Anyone can grow into being a hero. Here’s how. read more

My father tried to show me the planets and stars.
See, just there. It looks like a dipper.
Follow where I’m pointing. No, a little to your right.
Yes, the telescope is adjusted properly.

But, I couldn’t see the pictures they supposedly made.

I tried to show my father the faces in trees.
See, just there. No, up a bit.
That’s just the leaves, the way the sunlight filters through them.
See, it’s gone now that the sun has moved.
How else can you see unless something shows it to you, I wondered?
There’s no such thing as a face in a tree. read more

We call it the wind,

How silly. Rather, spirits

The Beauty in Being Broken

A perfect afternoon for a stroll. She grabbed her keys and, leaving her phone at home, she looked both directions from her front door before deciding to walk down to the park. It was less than a mile, but the walk might clear her head and relax her body. She looked at the trees and sky. Weather at the beginning of summer was always so weird. Some days felt blistering while others seemed more like fall. Today had more of a fall feel: warm sun, cool breeze. Some flowers were blooming while others seemed to be deciding if they should. Much like people. Some bloom no matter what is going on in their lives. She wasn’t one who bloomed easily. read more

The Task: Part 4

They awoke to a shock of thunder that shook the cottage. Going to the door, Joel opened it to a dark day but just a sprinkle of rain. “I’m going to check the underbrush and the lean-to.”

“I’m going with you,” said Noella scrambling to get her cloak before he went out alone.

He was about to say there was no need when he saw the resolve on her face and shrugged. He grabbed his stick. When they got to the underbrush, he said, “I think I was about here when I saw the glint. No, I was more this way.” He moved closer to the pump. Nothing showed itself in the gray light. He shook his head and started towards the lean-to. read more
